Hello and welcome back to the presidential Dogpound.
Well, the dog is out of the bag and we now know who the Republican and Democratic presidential challengers are going to be: Senator McCain and Senator Obama. Surprise! So now the official mudslinging can get started with earnest. Of course, there are a few other surprises. One, presidential candidates have “handlers.” One of these two gentlemen will be leading the greatest country in the world and they need handlers. Makes you wonder who is really in charge.
Then there are “cards.” Who is going to play the card? One is the “race” card, which is really too late because Senator Obama is who he is – no hiding that; then the other card is the “age” card, which applies to Senator McCain [no hiding this either], who is old enough to be our grandfather.
However, the most surprising thing so far is their choice for VP. Senator Obama has been hit with his lack of experience, so he picked Joe Biden who has military and foreign experience a mile long, and Senator McCain, to counter his age of 72, picked a VP who is almost half his age, and to go the Democrats one better, he picked a female. Take that!
That being said, I have to wonder how important are these picks anyway? When was the last time you heard the VP doing anything other than chairing the Senate chambers, smiling and clapping approvingly in the background as the President gives a speech, or being sent to some funnily-named country to be the USA’s representative for a ceremonial coronation?
If the VP is important to the ticket, then we should see something like this: “Good evening. This is the President of the United States and it is my honor to turn this evening’s Address to the Nation over to my VP. He has developed a fantastic program to make us energy free of foreign oil in the next 10 years and I am going to let him explain and lead this program. Godspeed, VP. I am so proud to have you on my team.” Now that would be a position that really means something to this country, but second fiddle is always second fiddle.

When I was a child, I remember my mom telling me, “Son, when you grow up, you can marry any girl you please.”
When I became a young man, I learned the sad fact was that I could not please any of them.
