Field Hockey
The Thomas Dale Knight field hockey team had to settle for the Central Region championship. For three years running, the Knights have won the championship and edged ever so close to the state championship.
Thomas Dale’s finishing the season with a 19 – 1 record was not enough to bring them a defeat over Westfield (20 – 4) during Thursday’s AAA field hockey quarterfinal at the U.S. National Training Center in Virginia Beach. Rain dampened the Knights chances of garnering their first state championship.
The team has been a consistent and dominant force in the Central Region. Coach Beth Jaeckle has put together a fit team that she says deserved a win this year, but just could not convert their runs into goals. Thomas Dale will not have too tough a time rebuilding their team next year. The Knights will be losing five seniors.
Boys Volleyball
It was a great run for the Knights’ boys volleyball team. No one can take back the 52-match winning streak that has made them the team to beat in Virginia. Deep Run stole the Knights’ thunder after TDHS had given the Wildcats their only two losses this season. In the Group AAA title match, Deep Run beat Thomas Dale 3-2, after going five matches.
Coach Michael Walker is not unfamiliar to state playoffs after taking the Knights to state playoffs five times and achieving the state championship last year.
It is more than likely that the Knight will be contenders again next year. The Thomas Dale boys teams will give up only three seniors before making another run at the title next year.
