Thomas Dale’s boys baseball team easily clinched the Central District title over Matoaca last Thursday night, 5-1, marking the sixth straight victory they’ve achieved over rival teams.
David Hernandez, a Thomas Dale first baseman, got the game off to a strong start in the second inning with a home run; though Matoaca player Logan Walker knocked a homer of his own in the third inning, the Warriors wouldn’t see another point in their favor for the rest of the game. Instead, the Knights logged four more hits, courtesy David Hernandez and Taylor Britt, to take the win.
Strong support was provided by Thomas Dale pitcher Bill Cullen, who pitched six straight innings and left the Warriors without a chance to connect with the ball. His biggest challenge came in the sixth inning, when loaded bases forced him to strike out two of Matoaca’s batters in order to maintain Thomas Dale’s edge over the competition.
Thomas Dale and Matoaca advanced to regional play on Tuesday, facing off against Patrick Henry and Mills Godwin, respectively.
