| At night, the Thomas Dale Lady Knights with their Central Region trophy. |
The Thomas Dale field hockey team is heading to state for their third consecutive year, thanks to their 19th win on Friday in the finals of the Central Regional tournament. The Knights (19-0) showed their strength and endurance on the field against Maggie Walker (15-4) with a 3-0 finish. Sophomore Kim Church scored the first goal early in the game, followed by a second goal by senior Kelsey Whittleton before the half. Whittleton knocked another goal in during the second half, giving the knights a comfortable lead.
Head Coach Beth Jaeckle says, “The senior group is anchoring the team. They have seen what it takes in the past three years and they’ve stepped up and performed.” Coach Jaeckle positioned the seniors on the outside for their strength. “This senior group deserved the right to come out with a regional win.”
Coach also believes they now know what it will take for a state title. “They work hard as a team but in state play it is individual one-on-one. As long as they have the determination, they have the skill. As long as they bring this back to the game, we will have a good chance.”
The Knights will travel to Virginia Beach to play in the Northern Region against Westfield for the state title this Thursday at 1 p.m. at the National Training Center in Va. Beach. Tickets are $10 at the gate.
