The upcoming Pony Baseball Bronco World Series coming to Chesterfield next summer is slated to bring more than just baseball players and tax revenue into the county.

It’s also ushering in some improvements at Harry G. Daniel Park.

During their meeting last week, the Board of Supervisors approved the appropriation of $120,000 from funds dedicated for tourism and economic development to the Parks and Recreation Harry G. Daniel Park Capital Improvement Projects. The new funds will be used for improvements to the park related to the tournament.

“With the World Series coming here next July, we needed a press box for all of the press that will be attending the tournament,” says Mike Golden, director of Parks and Recreation.

The new press box will be built on top of the current concession stand at the park, with an estimated cost of $100,000. Other improvements include fencing and backstop renovations and replacements, as well as an improved water system and a new sewer line installed for restrooms.

“The fields were built in the mid-80s, so we would like to improve and update the fields for this tournament,” says Golden. “The water system improvements will give us better water services to water the fields.”

Smaller improvements to be made will include additional portable seating and restrooms and additional electrical service. After the first two years of the series, CBC may ask the Board for additional funding of $10,000 per year to keep the tournament on a long-term basis. This additional funding would go towards sports lighting improvements and general maintenance operations.

The Pony World Series will bring eight teams of 11-year-old boys from across the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico to Chesterfield for the championship event. Depending on the number of people traveling to Chesterfield for the tournament, the event is estimated to bring $130,000 of revenue per year of the tournament. Tax revenues would be approximately five to six percent of this amount.
