Worst Intersections

I write this article from time to time, but I believe that there are enough motor vehicle accidents at these intersections, that require a fire and EMS response, that it needs to be reiterated regularly. The following intersections fall into my category of worst intersections:

•  The intersection of Sand Hills Rd. & Jefferson Davis Hwy.

•  The intersection of Old Bermuda Hundred Rd. & Jefferson Davis Hwy.

•  The intersection of Forest Lake Rd. & Jefferson Davis Hwy.

•  Both intersections that take you to the post office.

•  The intersection of Happy Hill Rd. & Jefferson Davis Hwy.

•  All access points to Rt. 10 east & west from Rt. 1 to I-95.

Though there are other intersections that I could name, these seem to be the ones where people are finding themselves in accidents on a regular basis. One of the major issues that all of these intersections have in common is that none of them are controlled by traffic lights. What this equates to is that you must be extremely alert when going through these areas. Patience is not a virtue held by most of the people who go through these areas.

Just today, Engine 14, Rescue 14, Medic 14, Medic 12, Medic 1, and Battalion 2 responded to an accident at Old Bermuda Hundred Rd. and Jefferson Davis Hwy. People were transported to the hospital, vehicles were damaged, and traffic was slowed and sometimes stopped for about 60-90 minutes. I do not know who or what caused this accident, but someone made a mistake, and three vehicles crashed.

We all do it, but talking on cell phones while driving has to come to a stop. It is going to probably take a state law to stop this practice, but until then, we need to pull off to answer or make calls on the cell phone. Our youngest drivers are those with the least driving experience, but receiving the greatest number of phone calls and text messages.

What I am trying to convey in this article is that these accidents are happening practically every day at one or more of these intersections. If you travel through this area on a regular basis or for that matter on an infrequent basis, then you need to proceed with caution through these areas. Would I be wasting words to say, SLOW DOWN?

On a slightly different note concerning traffic, when you read this school will be in session. The school crossings will be active, and you will need to allow more time to get to your destination. Keep in mind, the crossing guard’s job is to cross your children safely. They do more than you know to keep traffic moving safely in the area of the schools, so give them a break.
