With the change from summer to fall, we see beautiful changes in the foliage that dresses our landscape. From fall to winter, the beauty changes to barrenness. These changes are necessary for new life to occur. Chesterfield Fire & EMS is about to undergo the most radical change that our organization has ever experienced, with our next fire chief coming from Norfolk Fire & EMS. There is no doubt in my mind that the people at the top of our organization could have taken over this department and done a great job in taking it into the future. However, this decision to hire the top fire official in Chesterfield County from outside of our ranks will allow our organization to see strengths and weaknesses that we may have never known that we have.
Since I became a volunteer in this department in 1976, and became salaried in 1985, our organization has had four different fire chiefs. Each one brought their own passion and expertise to the proverbial table. Chief Senter will come to the table of this organization, not only for the first time, but also as the fire chief. His perspective will be based on knowledge, skills, and abilities obtained somewhere else, and brought here to allow a great department to become an even greater one. The plus that our new chief will have in his corner is the fact that he comes to an organization that already has great people with numerous talents.
I wish he and his family the very best as they transition into our community. Though my time with this organization grows shorter with every passing day, I still look forward to coming to work and doing my job. I also love being a part of new chapters in people’s lives, and this one is no different. Change comes hard for some, and easy for others. If you were to ask the folks who attend Bermuda Baptist Church about change since I became their pastor, I am sure that the answers would depend on their tenure with the church, and whether or not they have caught the vision. Chesterfield Fire & EMS is no different. Our new chief is only one person, but with him comes an opportunity to see and experience things from a totally different perspective.
On November 2, we will change our clocks back one hour. As you are changing the clock, remember to change your smoke alarm batteries.
