Two Complaints Filed Related to Chesterfield’s Handling of Primary

The NAACP and Dewey & Leboeuf LLP have filed complaints with the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice concerning alleged discrimination against African-Americans, elderly, and disabled voters during the February primary elections. The suits claim residents’ rights to vote were violated.
The suits request that the Justice Department investigate and enforce violations of the Voting Rights Act, the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
During the primary, hundreds of voters were denied the right to vote, as a higher-than-expected voter turnout led to long lines, parking problems, and shortages of Democratic ballots at nine of Chesterfield County’s 63 polling locations. Some votes were scribbled on blank scraps of paper, but the Board of Elections later refused to count them.
