OFFICIALS' THOUGHTS
SUPERVISOR JIM HOLLAND
“It was an outstanding election. I’m proud and humbled by how it turned out, especially in the Dale District. I was quite proud as supervisor from Dale because we were the only district in Chesterfield County to carry President-elect Obama.”
REGISTRAR LARRY HAAKE
“The electronic pollbooks worked very well; we were checking people in faster than we ever have. As far as other improvements go, the weather could have been better!”
DAVID TURETSKY, ELECTION OBSERVER
“Chesterfield County was under a brighter spotlight, with the Department of Justice, the Senate, and the newspapers attuned to the story. I think there’s credit to be shared there. Without those bright lights, I don’t think there would have been as much attention as was given.”
HEARD AT THE PRECINCTS
Ian Wright
Ecoff precinct
“At 7 o’clock this morning, it [line] was out the door, down the sidewalk, down the other sidewalk, and almost to the dumpsters.”
Robert Hart
Bellwood precinct
“We had a big crowd earlier, but now [at 10 a.m.] we’ve gotten a break.”
George Roberts
Matoaca MS precinct
“We had a pretty good turnout; 10% voted absentee. Out of 3,900 in the precinct, they were voting about 300 every hour.”
Gene Harris
waited an hour and 10 minutes to vote at Salem Middle
“I would have come out to vote regardless of the line, but they way they did it this year was just bad. They only had one line; it wasn’t done alphabetically, and I could see three of the election officials at a table doing nothing. It’s time for Chesterfield County to get rid of Haake.”
