A Mistake or a Freudian Slip?
To the Editor:
“Redistribute the wealth!”
Wow, what does that mean? I know what it meant to Marx, Lenin, Mao Tse-Tung, and Castro, but did a presidential candidate make a mistake or was it a Freudian slip?
I have not been out of work a day since I was 12 years old, worked my way through college as a custodian, and feel I have earned everything I have.
Like we observed in Dr. Zhivago, when you rob from Peter to pay Paul, you will always get Paul’s support.

Right to Know of Future Roads
To the Editor:
The fact that the Branner Station development has been delayed in no way lets the county off the hook on identifying the routes for a north-south and east-west road. So land acquisition can begin and further development along the identified route be denied. People who presently have homes along any proposed routes have a right to know that the county/state will be looking to buy their homes in the future so they can plan their futures. Both elected/appointed county officials have a responsibility to pursue the road issues. They no longer will have a developer to blame for years of inaction in identifying the routes for the north-south and east-west roads. This is a government responsibility, not Hunt’s or some other developer if Hunt doesn’t pursue this project. Let’s not use this delay as justification for inaction on where these roads will be. The county needs to be proactive.

JDA Deserves More Credit
To the Editor:
I can’t express enough the disappointment in your recent article “Americana…” After spending the last year, working with the many organizations, local churches, and volunteers who have committed their time to assist over 275 families, your article chose to tell the story of a few families that perhaps did not get the assistance they expected.
The coalition of volunteers has spent countless hours in the evenings and on weekends over the past year, assessing the needs of the residents, providing information on resources for housing, financial assistance, moving companies, etc. In the fall of 2007, local real estate agencies and mortgage consultants met with residents to encourage home ownership; in the spring of 2008 the coalition held a resident meeting to share information, and over the past several months, we have assisted many families in making choices, completing necessary applications, assistance in removing debris, and many other initiatives that have assisted countless families in many different ways.
We successfully negotiated with the management of Americana to consider making some changes to their initial offer to better serve the residents and to allow residents with children to relocate before the 2008 school session began. The coalition was also able to encourage the county and Department of Social Services to provide a hotline for residents to use for information and resources, which proved to be very useful for the residents that chose to contact them.
I believe that the many volunteers of the organizations who have committed their personal time to assist the families in Americana deserve a better story, one that tells of their dedication to our community and their commitment to lending a helping hand to those in need. I personally appreciate and thank each of them.

More Concern for Country or TV Viewing
To the Editor:
As I watch America succumb to the death grip of mob rule, the Bolsheviks preparing to ravage the homeland, and the nobility of our nation scrambling for their survival beyond the political vortex of a dying America, my concern, like yours, is with what’s on T.V. tonight.

Response from Supervisor is Narrow
To the Editor:
I was surprised to see in the RTD on Sunday that the Branner Station housing development is on hold, due to our current economic downturn and problems with buying up the required land. Bermuda Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle commented that “Due to the housing market, I’m not surprised. I just feel bad for all the people who were counting on jobs.”
Well, I do too, but on one level I am unhappy with Ms. Jaeckle’s comment. For me, it carries an unspoken assumption that housing developments are undertaken solely to provide local jobs in construction. I do not share that assumption. For too long, we have allowed the construction industry “tail” to wag the housing development “dog.” Branner Station needs to stand on its own merits, irrespective of temporary jobs that it would provide.
By the way, I will miss Rick Gray during his extended break. Gray’s column has been one of the highlights of your newspaper.

Buckling up is Necessary
To the Editor:
It is upsetting when I read all of the highway deaths when the deceased was not buckled up. The thing is that you cannot tell them that once they are dead.
Can you please print something in large, darkened letters that may awaken them before the Grim Reaper makes his call?
Sometimes I’m not sure if a “hardhead” really isn’t harder than a windshield.
