Strap In or Not?
To the Editor:
I would like to respond to a letter to the editor published October 29 regarding seat belts. I’m on the “other side” of the seat belt argument, though this is not intended to discourage people from wearing theirs!
On December 17, 2002, I had an excruciating migraine headache. I contacted my physician’s office and they squeezed me in for an appointment. Since I had such a blinding headache (along with the usual side effects), I called for a ride to the office. When I got in the car, I did indeed put on my seat belt, but along the way, my driver had to pull over several times as I was so nauseous (well, you get the picture). Since I had to open the door and lean out to be sick, after a time or two of this, I did not put my seatbelt on (and I was lucky) . . .
We were T-boned turning into the office parking lot – right in my door! Thankfully, I did not have my seatbelt on! Though my injuries were very severe, I did not receive a major head trauma, which would have been one of the first things to happen if I was “secured” in place! When we were transported to MCV/VCU, that was one of the main concerns – did I sustain any major head trauma. I did not, but had I been wearing my seatbelt, I would not have been as fortunate.
So, I take offense to Mr. Rippy thinking that all people that do not want to wear a seatbelt are “hardheaded.” Sometimes it’s a choice made by weighing previous situations and road conditions. I wear my seatbelt when I don’t think the situation of a side-door impact is a possibility, but believe me, I’m much more reluctant to wear mine “around town”!

RTD Ends Global Warming Debate
To the Editor:
After two centuries of loss, glaciers of Alaska grow. Unusually low temperatures in 2007-2008 helped add to the mass. This was on page 4 of the Times-Dispatch. So I guess that ends the debate.

Turn off the Irrigation, Please
To the Editor:
Each year there are numerous articles printed about conserving water, water restrictions, etc., etc. Each year during periods of drought, these restrictions are put in place. One restriction that would save more water would be the mandatory installation of rain sensors that would shut off automatic sprinkler systems during periods of rain. There is nothing more wasteful then sprinkler systems running full tilt when it’s raining out. This is especially true during periods of heavy rainfall. There has to be a way to put a stop to this wasteful practice.
