Whitman Isn’t Likely
To the Editor:
I read with interest ‘Rick Gray’s column today (“McCain, Whitman, and Schwarzenegger,” August 20). His proposal for John McCain to name Christie Todd Whitman as his running mate, thereby steering the Republican Party into the mainstream of environmental thinking, has some merit in theory.
It occurs to me however that the majority of ‘Rick’s local Republican readers are going to view the idea of Whitman as VP with horror. Don’t worry, readers, in my opinion, this is not going to happen.
McCain has already signaled loudly and clearly that he prefers to talk about drilling offshore and calling for gas tax vacations. It is too late for him to push his base out of their comfort zone. Whitman, who served briefly as George W. Bush’s EPA Administrator until Bush learned with disgust that she actually believed in the existence of climate change, is unacceptable to the main bloc of the Party. That bloc is barely resigned to the fact that McCain believes in climate change – but they will vote for him if they conclude that he will not act on his belief in major ways.

Historically Incorrect
To the Editor:
I usually bite my tongue when people remember “Old Chester” the way it wasn’t, but this time I have to correct a misconseption. Joe Sandford’s store was not where Sibley is opening his new restaurant. It was located on Hundred Road next to the old post office building that has been torn down for Walgreens.
Mr. Nat House and his wife owned the brick building now being renovated by Charlie Sibley. Everyone called it “Houses’ Food House.”
Joe Sandford originally operated a store (a long white wooden building) across the street from G. E. Miles office building.
