On Development in Chesterfield

To the Editor:

I considered Gloria Sauer’s letter today (“Gray is Out of Touch”) and must politely disagree.

The topic at hand was the development of western Chesterfield County, and the role of the Board of Supervisors in regulating that development. Granted, many of us who live in Chesterfield are now unwilling to welcome future house-seeking “immigrants” out of sheer self-interest. Granted, money talks in America. Granted, the current economic hardships in America will not last forever and building pressures never go away. But that does not mean that ‘Rick Gray and others who argue for restricted development are out of touch with reality.

Those who argue that we need to bow to the principles of capitalism and let the builders build should consider two items. First, the voters of Chesterfield got rid of one set of Supervisors who preferred to let builders build. It would seem silly for the new set of Supervisors to get themselves voted out of office by repeating the policies of their predecessors. Second, the Swift Creek development issues have a great deal to do with water quality. I cannot afford bottled water, so I would prefer the Board to err on the side of the purity of the Swift Creek Reservoir. America’s environmental movement did not build those gas hogs that got us into this gas crisis – in fact, they argued for decades in favor of the tighter fuel standards that we are finally accepting. Rather than wrongly blame environmentalists for Chesterfield’s current predicament of suburban sprawl, I would prefer to listen carefully to what they have to say about our water needs. Our gasoline needs may not last forever if we are able to develop alternatives, but we are always going to need water.

Expressing ChesterFest Support

To the Editor:

I strongly disagree with James F. Pearson.  I live in Chester Village Green and am excited to have ChesterFest in our neighborhood.  The attention it brings to the businesses and homes in Chester Village Green far exceeds the inconvenience of a detour for a single day.

Plan for That One Day of the Year

To the Editor:

While I can understand the frustration Mr. Pearson feels at being forced to detour to his home behind the Village Green during ChesterFest (August 6), I really can’t feel too sorry for him. At least he can get in and out of his subdivision.  Those of us living in Gay Farms behind the YMCA are literally trapped in or out of our homes during parades. These parades begin at the Y and we must plan our day then, to be out of our homes or back in them long before the parade even begins. We have no alternate access; it’s one way in, one way out.  Our street is totally blocked and we are prisoners in our homes. Heaven forbid an emergency!

So I suggest that you learn to plan your day as we have been doing for years and haven’t asked for special treatment.  If you don’t attend or support ChesterFest, then use that day as a vacation from home or do your errands as we’ve learned to do.  Leave ChesterFest where it is, the center of our town.  Gee, it’s only for one day a year!
