So, we have a new dilemma in the Lashley household. My child will not go play outside anymore. The boy who loved being outside more than anything in the world refuses, cries, and braces himself against the door; he will absolutely not go outside. As soon as you open the front door (keep in mind he is still protected by a storm door), he squeezes his big brown eyes shut and will not open them until you have walked outside to the car and placed him safely in his car seat. He is scared silly of bugs. Yes, little, tiny, insignificant bugs. I cannot even begin to explain this phenomenon.
It all started with a June bug. June bugs love crepe myrtles and they are in full bloom during this hot summer. As he was playing one day, a June bug decided to swoop right by his little face and scare the daylights out of him. Must have been the wings; they do make an eerie buzzing sound. I didn’t really think anything of it, until his MeMe mentioned that he cried desperately whenever they would travel out of doors. I began to take notice. All of a sudden he wanted Mommy or Daddy to carry him to and from the car and when prompted to go outside, would refuse and ask to draw or play play-dough, which are inside activities at our house. I couldn’t believe it. He would beg to be taken out only a few short weeks ago, and practically lived outside. That, I’m sad to say, is no more.
Not only is he scared of June bugs, but he is now scared of all bugs that fly. Especially dragonflies. I happen to think dragonflies are quite beautiful. Not my little guy. The minute they make a dash in his direction, he flips out and runs as if the Wicked Witch of the West herself is after him. It is a sad sight to behold. He isn’t faking it; he is really scared. So I have had many talks about the bugs, explaining that they just want to stop by and say hello sometimes, and have even managed to get him outside in the last few days – of course, promising that the bugs are gone and that the coast is clear for him to run wild. But of course, five minutes into playtime, he sees a bug of some sort and hightails it to the back door begging to go in. I know it’s not right to laugh, and I don’t in front of him, but oh, it’s so hard not to when he isn’t looking. I would love to tell him that he could squash one of those bugs with his little hand, but let’s not promote violence to a two-year-old.
So, I’m sad to say, he is still not going outside and he is still closing his eyes to the wonders of the outside world. I guess he figures if he can’t see them, then they aren’t there. Good coping skills; I always said he was a bright little guy! We are sure he will out grow this; they all have some weird “thing” when they are little, and you know, it will be a great story to tell at his wedding!
