Nina Williams, right, a youth director with the Winchester Green Youth Program, had 16 youth volunteers for the cleanup. Pictured with Williams is Tamia Washington.
Fifty-seven volunteers at the Falling Creek site took part in in last Saturday’s 10th Annual James River Regional Cleanup.  The combined efforts made the cleanup an outstanding success;  479 garbage bags of litter, 321 bags of recyclable materials, 150 large and/or unusual items; and 30 tires were collected.  Over 900 volunteers in total participated along the James and Appomattox rivers.

Cleanup activities were held along more than 70 miles of the river, streams, and nearby roads, resulting in hundreds of bags of trash and recyclable materials being collected.  The cleanup, which is sponsored by the James River Advisory Council (JRAC), attracted dedicated volunteers to 11 sites among eight localities along the river, including the counties of Appomattox, Buckingham, Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan, as well as the city of Richmond.

The Falling Creek site included volunteers from the youth groups of Winchester Green Youth Program, bringing 16 volunteers; and the Hang Time Program, sponsored by the Bensley Community Center; as well as many Bensley and Falling Creek advocates who live in the community.

Heather Barrar, a volunteer with JRAC, was working at the Falling Creek site. “This site needs more publicity,” she says.  “There is just too much trash and not enough people.”
