Surviving Tax Season
W2s flood your mailbox and you begin to notice a sudden increase in advertisements for TurboTax or H&R Block, all providing a clear reminder that tax season is just around the corner. With all of the 1040EZs, Form 1120s, adjustments, schedules, child tax credits and more, its no wonder that just the sheer thought of tax season can trigger the anxiety that it is known to create.

Lurking in the Depths
It is one of the final scenes in the movie Jaws. Chief Brody is shoveling a mixture of fish parts off the stern of the Orca, in a last ditch effort to attract the killer shark. Suspense builds as the sheriff continues shoveling bait into the water. Without warning, the massive shadow of the killer shark emerges under the water and with great speed, the shark thrusts itself into the boat, baring its massive teeth.

The siren of a fire engine, police car or ambulance has become a universal sound for an emergency. If we are in our cars, we pull over. If we are at home, we look out the window, to see where it’s headed. If it is coming to our own house, it can’t come fast enough. It signals urgency.

But if you put a frog in a pot of cold water and slowly turn the heat on until it boils, the frog will never jump out?!"

Starting Your Own Business
Halfway between Suffolk and Petersburg is a diner, rich in hometown atmosphere. As you walk in, you’re immediately greeted with true southern hospitality. The quaint atmosphere is inviting, and the red-checkered table clothes lining the tables are reminiscent of "the good ol’ days." An elderly gentleman takes a seat at one of the tables and almost instantly, a lively waitress appears, coffee and cream in hand—"Will it be the usual today, Mr. Harris?"

Flu Preparedness
A crisp chill in the air has signaled the arrival of autumn. Brightly colored leaves covering the ground, Friday night football crowds, lawns and porches speckled with orange pumpkins, and the sight of children tugging on their parents’ jackets every time they pass a candy display in the grocery store.

A Brighter Future for Medical Research
You could immediately tell he had spent most of his life in a laboratory, as opposed to an office building. He looked as if he would be more comfortable in his lab coat than the neatly pressed blazer he wore. I suspected that visiting a Congressman’s office was quite far out of his daily routine.
