The mother-daughter team, Hollie Statzer, left, and Jade Williams, in their new shop.
Don’t let the name fool you: Jade’s Jeans offers way more than just denim. Instead, Whistle Stop Shopping Center’s newest business carries a full lineup of clothes for teens and young adults of both genders – shirts, pants, skirts, purses, belts, accessories, shoes, formal dresses, sunglasses, ties, and more.
Owned jointly by mother-and-daughter team Hollie Statzer and Jade Williams, Jade’s Jeans will also be a haven for teens who need space to hang out. “It’s a teen-friendly environment,” Statzer says. “It’s a place where they can come and be themselves; it’s a place to hang out.” Though chairs already dot a corner of the store, Statzer is planning to add a TV and sofa in the near future as well.
Statzer and Williams have been collecting clothing for Jade’s Jeans since January, but the idea of the business was percolating long before that. “We thought of the idea about two years ago,” says Statzer. “I have three kids, and they outgrow their clothes so quickly.” About a year ago, she checked details about a unit in the Whistle Stop Shopping Center, and a job layoff spurred her into making Jade’s Jeans a reality. The business officially opened on June 22.
“We’re excited about it because we’ve wanted to do it for so long,” Statzer says.
Statzer and Williams have already seen a positive response from the community towards Jade’s Jeans. “A lot of people have come by and have dropped clothes off,” Statzer says. Anyone who drops off clothing will be able to receive store credit in return.
Much of that positive response may be due to the location of Jade’s Jeans. “It’s in the middle of three high schools and two middle schools, so it’s very convenient,” explains Williams.
Statzer adds, “Clothes are expensive, and kids can’t always afford name brands. This gives everyone equal opportunities.”
Now that they’re safely established, the Jade’s Jeans proprietors are preparing for a grand opening celebration to be held from July 22-26. Members of the public are invited to come out, enjoy themselves, and browse the store’s selection; anyone who visits will also be entered in a drawing for a George Foreman grill.
The road to that opening has been a difficult one at times for Statzer and Williams. “We had no financial backing, so we did all of the work on our own,” Statzer says. “Everyone has been so supportive of us. I have so many people to thank. I couldn’t have done it myself – not without Richmond Freecycle, Craigslist, Charles Landon, and all of my friends and family pulling together.”
At the end of the day, family is what Jade’s Jeans is all about: Statzer and Williams are each half owners of the business, and Statzer hopes to hand the reins over to her daughter one day. “This is for Jade,” Statzer says. “It’s for her future.”
Jade’s Jeans is located at 10116 Chester Rd. and is open Mondays though Saturdays from 2-9 p.m. For more information, call 425-9559.
