Trump aide Paul Manafort jailed for another 43 months

Manafort has been jailed since last June

US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort to a total of 73 months, of which 30 were to run concurrently with last week's sentence. "It is hard to overstate the number of lies and the amount of fraud and the extraordinary amount of money involved".

Manafort, who made a lucrative career as a political consultant to foreign politicians from dictators in Asia and Africa to oligarchs in Ukraine and Russian Federation, briefly served as President Donald Trump's campaign director. Manafort was among the first people charged in the investigation, and though the allegations did not relate to his work for Trump, his foreign entanglements and business relationship with a man the USA says has ties to Russian intelligence have made him a pivotal figure in the probe.

The charges include 16 counts of state felonies, which would put Manafort behind bars for up to an additional two decades if convicted.

Shortly after his sentencing, a NY grand jury accused Manafort of 16 counts of mortgage fraud to obtain bank loans.

The Mueller team has prosecuted Manafort in both jurisdictions for charges related to his foreign consulting work.

The prosecutors say Manafort and Kilimnik met secretly during the US presidential campaign and that their encounter cuts "to the heart" of their investigation whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to help him win.

She said the question of whether any members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation was "not presented in the case".

Mr Trump has repeatedly defended him and floated the idea of granting a pardon, but would not be able to do so in a state case.

Given the time that he has already served, Manafort faces nearly seven more years in prison.

Wednesday's sentencing comes in a week of activity for the investigation. However, on Wednesday, he spoke on his own behalf, reportedly addressing the courtroom from a wheelchair to say, "I accept responsibility for the acts that have brought us here today".

Because he breached his plea deal, prosecutors need no longer abide by their pledge to consider recommending leniency for Manafort in exchange for his substantial help. The federal judge in the D.C. case, Jackson, concluded that Manafort gave false information, and on Wednesday she again rejected defense attorneys' efforts to get her to reconsider. His lawyers suggested that Manafort only faced conspiracy charges because Mueller couldn't charge him with anything related to collusion.

"That results in a very harsh process for the defendant", Downing said.

Jackson told Manafort still is not being straight with the court which, she told him pointedly, is one of those places where facts still matter.

Any term Jackson imposes could overlap with or be served in addition to the almost four years the 69-year-old Manafort received last week in federal court in Alexandria on related tax and bank fraud convictions at trial.

Manafort is one of a half-dozen former Trump associates and senior aides charged by Mueller, although none of them have been accused so far of direct collusion with Moscow to get Trump elected to the White House.

Speaking to reporters after the sentencing, Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing said Jackson exhibited callousness that was "hostile and totally unnecessary".
