The president has turned on Mr Cohen, who was his personal lawyer and fixer for approximately a decade, and accused him of lying.
"The defense now to Cohen saying under oath he NEVER asked for a pardon is a familiar one; What's The Meaning of Never". "I said NO. He lied again!"
Cohen's lawyers say he did not contradict himself to Congress because he did not ask Trump himself for a pardon. Mueller is investigating possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. It also followed a Friday tweet by the president accusing him of committing perjury in sworn testimony last week before the House Intelligence Committee.
Cohen, who has pleaded guilty to nine felonies stemming from a federal probe into campaign violations and other crimes, claims he's out at least US$1.9 million in fees and costs and another US$1.9 million in penalties, which the company promised to repay. Cohen was scheduled to report to federal prison on March 6 but a judge postponed the sentence to begin in May so that Cohen would have more time to arrange testimony as well as recover from shoulder surgery.
But the president's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said that Cohen had lawyers reach out to him previous year about the possibility of Trump intervening.

Trump and Giuliani have repeatedly questioned Cohen's credibility.
As a result, Cohen hired lawyers, and the Trump Organization, then run by Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Jr., promised to pay them, the lawsuit said.
"His [Cohen's] lawyer said that they went to my lawyers and asked for pardons", Trump said.
Months later, Cohen agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in at least two separate investigations: Robert Mueller's probe into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election, and the case in the Southern District of NY stemming from hush money payments made to two women alleged to have engaged in extramarital affairs with Trump. He was interviewed privately by both the Senate and House intelligence committees last week and has another daylong meeting with the House intelligence panel behind closed doors on Wednesday.
No pardon was given, and Cohen ultimately pleaded guilty and is cooperating against the president in separate investigations by the special counsel and by federal prosecutors in NY.
