At his trial, one juror refused to join the other 11 to convict him on 10 additional foreign banking and bank fraud charges.
His sentencing marks a spectacular downfall for a high-rolling Republican political guru who advised USA presidents, including Mr Trump, and foreign leaders. For decades, he headlined the glitzy, big-money lobbying game in Washington and raked in tens of millions of dollars along the way.
"Manafort chose repeatedly and knowingly to violate the law - whether the laws proscribed garden-variety crimes such as tax fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and bank fraud, or more esoteric laws that he nevertheless was intimately familiar with, such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA)", Mueller's memo read.
The Virginia case was the first trial of charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether there was coordination or collusion by the Trump campaign. It stems from his overseas work advising politicians in Ukraine.
Mueller is preparing to submit to U.S. Attorney General William Barr a report on his investigation into whether Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation and whether Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe. "And while some of these offenses are commonly prosecuted, there was nothing ordinary about the millions of dollars involved in the defendant's crimes, the duration of his criminal conduct, or the sophistication of his schemes".
Judge Ellis said he was surprised that Manafort did not "express regret for engaging in wrongful conduct".
"Manafort did not commit these crimes out of necessity or hardship", Mueller's office said. "He nonetheless cheated the United States Treasury and the public out of more than $6 million in taxes at a time when he had substantial resources".
Kylie Jenner beats Mark Zuckerberg to becomes youngest self-made billionaire

For their part, Manafort's lawyers seek mercy for a man once considered one of America's premier political consultants, advising four USA presidents and working around the world. In the District case, prosecutors say Manafort has failed to live up to the terms of his plea bargain by providing false information to investigators in interviews.
- Ari Melber (@AriMelber) March 8, 2019I would expect on Manafort, after this 47 month sentence in VA, that the special counsel will seek, and Judge Amy Berman Jackson will impose, a few years' consecutive time in the DC case. He faces another sentencing next week in Washington.
"The special counsel's attempt to vilify Mr. Manafort as a lifelong and irredeemable felon is beyond the pale and grossly overstates the facts before this court", Manafort's attorneys said.
According to the filed complaint, the Trump Organisation refused to pay him compensations once it became obvious that Cohen would assist Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into its work. The special counsel's office added that the former campaign manager "blames everyone from the special counsel's office to his Ukrainian clients for his own criminal choices".
Regardless of Ellis' decision, Manafort's legal travails are far from over. However, in the proceedings in D.C. over the breach of his plea deal, there have been hints at what in Manafort Mueller's team see as being at the "heart" of their probe.
But the judge also rejected Manafort's attorneys claims that the lack of any such evidence undermined the case, saying he had considered that issue at the beginning of the case.
