Pakistan scrambles jets over 'IAF airspace violation'

India Attacks Pakistan: Air Force Crosses Border, 'Bombs Terror Camp' In Balakot

Pakistan says Indian fighter jets crossed into and bombed its territory

Pakistan's ruling party, Prime Minister Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in a series of tweets has reacted on the Indian Air Force (IAF) operation on the JeM terror camps in Balakot, Muzaffarabad and Chakothi in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

The attack comes after more than 40 CRPF jawans were killed in Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Major General Asif Ghafoor, a spokesman for Pakistan's military, has disputed India's version of the attack.

Lt. Col. Devender Anand, an Indian army spokesman, said they fired at the Nowshera, Poonch and Akhnoor sectors, prompting Indian troops to "strongly and befittingly" respond.

"Facing timely and effective response from Pakistan Air Force (the Indian jets) released payload in haste while escaping near Balakot".

India says the jets struck a terrorist training camp, killing a large number of militants.

India said 300 militants were killed but Pakistan said there were no casualties.

Referring to India's claim that its airstrike targeted terrorists, Lu said combatting terrorism "is a global issue and a global challenge". The attack is believed to be the worst against India's military since a rise in insurgency in 1989. "I hope the government will now go after Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed", Owaisi said.

Meanwhile, China a close ally of Pakistan, called for restraint from both Islamabad and New Delhi to prevent further escalation.

"We are a responsible nation and our forces are capable to defend each every inch of our motherland", he told a local television channel.

Earlier, FM Qureshi summoned an emergency meeting at the Foreign Office (FO) on Tuesday to discuss the situation following the Indian Air Force's (IAF) violation of Line of Control (LoC). "If it is not contained locally, it will have a larger impact on the wider region", said Maj Gen (retd) ANM Muniruzzaman, president of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies.

India's air force conducts bombing raids inside Pakistan. They said they had been expecting an Indian response after the attack earlier this month.

Although LoC is being mentioned, Balakot, where the attack took place, is actually in Pakistan.

Shelling across the LoC has occurred frequently over the past few years but incursions into the other country's air space are rare - let alone an attack well into Pakistan.
