Trump Delays State of the Union Address Until Shutdown Ends

Trump Intent on Delivering State of Union Address in House Chamber

President Trump accepts Pelosi's initial invitation to give State of the Union on House floor

CNN host Alisyn Camerota praised the commander-in-chief for sounding "presidential" in tweets acknowledging that he would not give his State of the Union address until the government shutdown ended.

Pelosi told Mr. Trump she won't allow a concurrent resolution authorizing his address to come to the floor, after Mr. Trump told her he planned to speak next week as originally invited.

President Donald Trump says he is postponing his State of the Union address until after "the Shutdown is over", following a standoff with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

By late afternoon, after Pelosi had rebuffed him, Trump seemed resigned to finding an alternative venue or perhaps not giving a speech at all.

As well, House Democrats were putting forward a new proposal, aiming to lure Trump away from his demand for a border wall by offering billions of new dollars for other border security measures.

I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives.

First Lady Melania Trump is inviting her guests as every first lady does, Conway said, and hoped that the speaker will not deny seats to her guests. He expanded on those sentiments during a subsequent event at the White House, calling the cancellation a "disgrace" and asserting that Pelosi didn't want to hear the truth about the need for better border security.

And Pelosi herself said on Thursday that "we will have some of our proposals for what comes next" in upcoming legislation offerings.

Trump announcing his decision said it was Pelosi's "prerogative" to suggest a later date.

The Department of Homeland Security later cast those concerns aside, saying its agents and officers had been preparing for months to protect the venue, and would be ready shutdown or not.

It is possible two Democratic centrists - Joe Manchin and Doug Jones - could vote with the GOP as they represent knife-edge states and Mr Jones is up for re-election in 2020.

Democrats have argued that with so many federal employees furloughed - temporarily laid off - or working without pay, the high-profile State of the Union address, which involves both chambers of Congress and the president, would not be logistically feasible.

When I extended an invitation on January 3rd for you to deliver the State of the Union address, it was on the mutually agreed upon date, January 29th.

In the meantime, Speaker Pelosi appears to be pushing Democrat lawmakers to continue efforts to reopen the government without addressing border security.

As the president must know, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has near total control over her chamber of Congress.

The clash between two of Washington's most powerful leaders escalated the standoff that has partly closed the government for 33 days and that threatens the United States economy and the livelihoods of about 800,000 federal workers.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump dismissed the Democratic leader's concerns about security resulting from the shutdown. "I think they're the most qualified people, not only to address it, but to make that assessment".

Pelosi initially wrote Trump last week to inform him the speech should be delayed, or delivered in writing, since the law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting the Capitol during the event are affected by the shutdown.
