Anger as Mnangagwa raises petrol prices in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean companies are also not producing enough to satisfy local demand or to earn foreign currency by exporting goods.

"And two, they are meant to undermine ... the ongoing re-engagement efforts of the president to market Zimbabwe at high level forums such as at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland", Mutsvangwa said.

"Guests of government by way of foreign missions, other registered foreign bodies and tourists will fuel and refuel at designated points at the price of 1.24 USA dollars per litre for diesel and 1.32 US dollars per litre for petrol upon production of proper identification documents", Mnangagwa said.

Four people were feared dead on Monday while more than 20 people were treated for gunshot wounds as violent protests swept through Zimbabwe, after the government increased the price of fuel.

"They are alleging he is inciting violence through Twitter and other forms of social media", Beatrice Mtetwa told CNN.

- Zimbabwe's President on January 12 announced a more than 100 percent rise in the price of petrol and diesel in a move to improve supplies as the country struggles with its worst fuel shortages in a decade.

Citizens, activists and opposition political parties blasted the government for being insensitive to the plight of the common man.

Offices and businesses remained closed on Wednesday and the streets of the capital, Harare, were largely deserted.

Protesters burned a police station, barricaded roads and looted shops in Harare, Kadoma and Bulawayo cities, while security forces responded with rubber bullets and teargas, and allegedly used live ammunition.

Minister of State for National Security Owen Ncube said Monday night that the State had activated all its security organs to deal with the situation. Until three days ago our fuel was $0.60, now... we are selling our fuel at $3.31 bond notes.

The country's own currency, known as bondnotes, has been depreciating in value. All the other networks including NetOne, Telecel and internet service providers also froze out their clients.

"We want Mnangagwa to know our displeasure in his failure", an angry Mthandazo Moyo in Bulawayo told news agency AFP. "President Mnangagwa, however, is consistent with the Mugabe administration with these violations".

Mr Mnangagwa came to power in November 2017 after long-time ruler Robert Mugabe resigned following a military takeover and mass demonstrations.

The beleaguered Zimbabwean government has threatened to expel some diplomatic missions and foreign sponsored non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for allegedly influencing regime change in the country.

He won a controversial poll a year ago that was marred by violence and claims of election rigging.
