The New York Jets are considering hiring Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator. Although New York hasn't been to the playoffs since 2010, the year McCarthy won the Super Bowl in Green Bay, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold provided a potentially bright future. McCarthy interviewed with the Jets last weekend but declined the chance to interview with the Cleveland Browns.

The 40-year-old Gase is also the first offensive-focused coach since Rich Kotite in 1996.

Regarded as one of the league's top young offensive minds, he'll be tasked with furthering the development of quarterback Sam Darnold and helping NY snap an eight-year postseason drought. Gase left to join John Fox's staff with the Chicago Bears in 2015. McCarthy was sacked after the Packers lost to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field on December 2, 20-17.

The Cincinnati Bengals and the Dolphins remain the only teams yet to name their head coach for the 2019 season.

Kitchens, Stefanski finalists for Browns job
As the team's success grew, Kitchens never campaigned to be Cleveland's coach but leading a team was always a goal. They went 5-3 down the stretch under interim head coach Gregg Williams .

After coaching the Jets for six seasons before being fired in 2014, Ryan was offered the Buffalo head-coaching job so quickly it was as if the Bills thought they were pursuing a hybrid of Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells.

Rhule seemed to be the favorite on Wednesday, but that took a turn just before it was announced that Gase got the job.

After a 5-11 season in 2018, Shurmur remains a work in progress in his second head-coaching stint. Does Gase have the right demeanor to lead the team?
