Jose Mourinho praised Marcus Rashford's "amazing" work rate during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The Red Devils are now 16 points off the top of the Premier League, and six points off fourth-placed Chelsea ahead of Sunday's fixtures.

With Chris Smalling injured, Mourinho deployed three central defenders but the Portuguese refused to blame his system for United's sluggish start.

According to theDaily Record, Mourinho accused Pogba of displaying a lack of respect for his team-mate's after his performance. The visitors finally came to life around the half hour mark when striker Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal for the club in all competitions for 981 minutes, going back to September 15. "(Not winning) has to do with the characteristics of the players. The players they don't understand that simplicity is genius, especially in some parts of the pitch.

Everton will remain sixth with victory but have not taken three points from Anfield since Kevin Campbell scored in a 1-0 win in September 1999.

United lined up with midfielders Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic alongside Phil Jones in what was a reshuffled defence, despite Marcos Rojo being on the bench, and when asked by BT Sport who will be available for the game against Arsenal on Wednesday, Mourinho replied: "I don't know".

"We don't have many mad dogs, the ones who bite all the ball all the team and press all the time, we don't have many with that spirit", he said. "And you kill the mentality of the good honest people around you", Mourinho reportedly added during his rant at Pogba. "We spoke before the game about running, it's very, very simple but in this day and age you have to run and run fast and be direct and make things happen".

Shaw drilled a shot wide of the far post off a 61st minute corner kick as United began to reassert its control of the match.

"Rashford runs at players and it causes havoc, it changes the picture all the time".
