RAI, the state television broadcaster, aired a video of the incident, showing the escalator suddenly accelerating, with people piling up at the bottom.

An escalator has given way at a metro station in Rome leaving several people injured, some of them seriously, Italian media report.

Approximately 20 soccer fans in Rome have reportedly been injured in terrifying escalator malfunction caught on film.

The AGI news agency said that "a large group of CSKA fans, probably under the influence of alcohol, began to jump together, provoking the collapse" of one part of the escalator.

She said that it appeared that "some Russian supporters were dancing and jumping on the escalator".

The prefect's office put the number of injured at 20, mostly Russians in town for a Champion's League soccer game between CSKA Moscow and Roma.

Emergency services described the escalator's steps as "split and crumpled" and surrounded by broken glass and beer bottles, reports Sky Italia.

Ansa said more than 20 people had been hurt, a lot of them suffering leg injuries.
