The missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi appears to be dead, US President Donald Trump has told reporters, saying there would be "severe" consequences for whoever is behind it.

Mr Trump has previously vowed to inflict "severe punishment" on Saudi Arabia if it was behind Mr Khashoggi's killing - but also said he is against cancelling military contracts with Riyadh.

"I will not be participating in the Future Investment Initiative summit in Saudi Arabia", treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin tweeted, referring to the meet.

Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo want everyone to cool their heels until the Saudis finish their investigation, "and Saudi Arabia is really making headway with their 'investigation, ' because today, one of the 15 alleged Saudi killers died in a vehicle accident in Riyadh", Colbert said.

This comes in the midst of the worldwide outcry over the disappearance and probable murder of Washington Post columnist and critic of the Saudi regime, Jamal Khashoggi, at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

He said Turkey has "an abysmal record" in treating its own journalists as does Saudi Arabia.

"I don't want to speculate on my worst fears".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Turkey Wednesday after holding talks with Saudi leaders in Riyadh.

"We approach them as though they're honest people dealing with us wanting to improve the lives of the people in the country they come from", he said.

Jamal Khashoggi, 60, has not been seen since entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, on October 2 and Turkish officials believe he was murdered.

Prof Cordner said the institute took a "generous view" of people who had indicated they wanted to spend time there observing.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (SC), a longtime Saudi supporter, warned of a serious problem in the US-Saudi relationship if the royal family was involved.

The Saudi government has repeatedly denied murdering Khashoggi.

Meanwhile, several high-profile human rights groups have demanded that Turkey ask the United Nations to investigate the possible killing of Mr Khashoggi.

Turkish investigators have for the second time searched the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where the journalist vanished from on October 2. "I know what I'm going to do and I'm going to sanction the hell out of Saudi".

Turkish authorities say Khashoggi was killed.

"Government welcomes the ongoing diplomatic interaction between the Republic of Turkey and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as the investigation which seeks to get to the bottom of this matter".
