He pointed out that the West and especially the USA are trying to block the path of Astana to prevent the settlement of the crisis in Syria, pointing out that the imposition of sanctions on the guarantor states (Russia, Iran, and Turkey) may aim to influence the results of the talks in Astana in particular.

Cavusoglu noted that Turkey expects the United States "to continue to be loyal to our traditional friendship and alliance" among nations, as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (OTAN). She wouldn't be drawn on whether the Trump administration would respond.

Turkey and the USA are now experiencing rocky relations after Washington imposed sanctions on Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul for not releasing American Pastor Andrew Brunson, who faces terrorism-related charges in Turkey.
