The Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin Has Passed Away At 76

The 18-time Grammy Award victor, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010, died at the age of 76 in her home in Detroit. In her own tribute to Franklin, LaBelle called the late singer her "sister in song".

Franklin's records sold millions of copies and the music industry couldn't honor her enough.

"For more than 50 years, she stirred our souls".

Paul McCartney called Franklin an inspiration and "the Queen of our souls", while Diana Ross hailed her "wonderful golden spirit". When you just know you're in the presence of greatness.

We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin's family and friends. Her gifts, natural and acquired, were a multi-octave mezzo-soprano, gospel passion and training worthy of a preacher's daughter, taste sophisticated and eccentric, and the courage to channel private pain into liberating song.

Also, Barack Obama on Thursday in a statement praised "Queen of Soul" for her "unmatched musicianship" which he said "helped define the American experience".

Although meant to be a touching tribute to the late singer, many Twitter users were angered by the president's comments.

Other than "Respect", her powerful cover of the Otis Redding tune that became a feminist anthem and her calling card, Franklin had dozens of Top 40 singles, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In a 2011 interview with CBS Sunday morning, Franklin also wanted the crew to see the park she asked the city to name after him (Rev. Franklin died in 1984, after being shot in a burglary attempt and remaining in a five-year coma).

The same farewell was given to civil rights icon Rosa Parks in 2005.
