On Saturday morning, a team led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accompanied by Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, State Forest Minister P Raju, Chief Secretary Tom Jose and Kerala Police Chief Loknath Behra took off in a helicopter from Thiruvananthapuram to survey the worst affected districts.

The fifth shutter of Cheruthoni dam was opened on Friday following increase in inflow in to the Idukki dam. "But we will ensure that people in Palakkad are provided with drinking water through tankers". The roads connecting the district to outside has been completely destroyed and traffic has been hit.

Rescue operations being carried out following a landslide, triggered by heavy rains at Adimali, in Idukki, Kerala on Thursday. Five members of a family in Malappuram and five from Idukky died due to landslides. Those residing in areas prone to landslips must move to relief camps set up at the district headquarters, the government said.

Dam reservoirs and rivers overflowed, sections of highways collapsed and homes were swept away in severe flooding in more than half of Kerala, after days of incessant rains left almost 54,000 people homeless and killed at least 29, officials said.

Hodgson rewarded by Palace for rescue act

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the Kerala Chief Minister yesterday in the wake of heavy rains and floods in the state, and offered all possible assistance to those affected.

Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese apostolic administrator Bishop Jacob Manathodath has appealed to church authorities under the diocese to open church schools and other institutions to the displaced people, and distribute food, clothes and other relief materials.

Heavy rains have been beating down northern and central Kerala since August 8.
