While this was the clearest and most direct acknowledgment by the President about the reason why his son, Donald Trump Jr., accepted the meeting with the Russian lawyer, Trump has made similar statements in the past. That happens when you have cases like this, said Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow on ABC's This Week.
But the headlines have just one problem. One, what the president said in France a year ago is perfectly in line with what he tweeted out this past weekend.
'Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower, ' Trump wrote in a Sunday tweet.
He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"
Senior Editor at National Review Jonah Goldberg joined Fox News Radio's Guy Benson to discuss Trump's tweet and more.
The meeting was attended by the president's son as well as Paul Manafort, then chairman of Trump's presidential campaign; Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner; and several Russians, including the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and their representatives.
Trump's lawyers also eventually admitted that Trump Jr. initial statement claiming the meeting had been about adoptions and nothing more had been dictated by President Trump himself from Air Force One. The argument that you can't be racist towards white people I think on its face is preposterous, but what the left does is they redefine racism to say only about institutional power against the powerless.
"I had bad information at the time and made a mistake in my statement", Sekulow said Sunday, noting that he had only been working for Trump a short time when he made the misstatement previous year.
Trump lawyer: If Mueller subpoenas president, case will go to Supreme Court
At the time , Trump and his White House had falsely claimed that he had only offered his input into the crafting of the statement. Sekulow also dismissed reports the president's son, Donald Trump Jr ., is in trouble because of Mueller's probe.
He added: "It's called opposition research or even research into your opponent".
But here's the thing: This is a tweet about how the Trump Tower meeting was totally fine - nothing illegal to see here. Trump wrote. "They are very unsafe & sick!"
"You then misled the country about the objective of the Trump Tower meeting when it became public. In this instance, they appear to have been different". Prosecutors say Mr. Manafort did not pay taxes on the millions of dollars he earned as a lobbyist for Ukraine, which is enmeshed in a territorial dispute with Russian Federation over the Crimean Peninsula. If recycling old stories and trying to pass them off as news is required, the Times will oblige happily.
Russian Federation has repeatedly denied claims it interfered in the November 2016 presidential elections, where Mr Trump defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Indeed, that's been the Trump team's story.
It is not the first time the president acknowledged the existence of the meeting using this line of defense, but it is the president's most blunt admission that the objective was to obtain damaging information against his then opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the presidential election. These other matters were the focus of the meeting, though not the original objective from the Trump team's perspective. Trump Jr. has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he couldn't remember if he told his father about the meeting.
What is new from the president's comments Sunday is his declaration that the meeting is "totally legal". Claims to the contrary are fake news.
In some ways, Rudy Giuliani has done exactly what President Trump hired him to do as his attorney: publicly defend him while discrediting Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Mueller wants to catch Trump in a lie about his foreknowledge of the meeting.
