Mugabe says he will not vote for successor Mnangagwa

Mnangagwa was the clear election front-runner, benefitting from tacit military support, loyal state media and ruling party controls of government resources.

If no presidential candidate wins more than 50 per cent of the vote, a runoff will be held September 8.

Previously-banned European Union election observers, present for the first time in years, said participation appeared high but warned of possible "shortcomings" in the vote process.

Under Mugabe, elections were often marred by violence, harassment and irregularities.

Why are officials results taking so long?

The election commission has denied any allegations of vote rigging and said it had five days to release the results.

During Mugabe's rule, national elections were overshadowed by repeated voting procedure violations and the suppression of the opposition. The election was the first since longtime leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November under military pressure and former confidante Emmerson Mnangagwa took power.

"My main concern is the (electoral commission), it obviously has a preferred party", he said.
