Jose Mourinho says Fred is not a direct replacement for Michael Carrick, but adds the Brazilian could be a key player in Manchester United's midfield this season. His form during the tournament was in contrast to his displays for United since his £89.3 million move from Juventus in 2016, which have seen flashes of his talent mixed with stretches of inconsistency.
"I would like to play against Leicester on Sunday but I have to play on Friday, so you don't get always in life what you want", the United boss went on.
"I've just come back from playing at a World Cup, where I really enjoyed the high pressure of the games".
"(Mourinho) doesn't look happy to me", Scholes told beIN Sports. "I would say third match, playing against a team in a similar situation as us, after three weeks is OK, is nearly like you need a preseason with them, but for the first two matches we have to fight for the points, so that is what we are going to do with the players available".
Pogba finds it harder to focus at United - Mourinho
Asked about his missing stars, Mourinho has admitted he is annoyed that he does not have a full squad to work with ahead of the new campaign.
Mourinho suggested Pogba had been more consistent at the World Cup because he felt "extra commitment" to France and hinted he should adopt the same approach when he gets back in a United shirt.
"The first match of the season is against Leicester and the second one is against Brighton", Mourinho said.
The Ecuador global was forced off with a calf injury during the 0-0 draw with San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara on Sunday and Mourinho does not think the 32-year-old will be able to feature against AC Milan, Liverpool or Real Madrid in the remaining tour games. "But for the first two matches we have to fight for the points, so that is what we are going to do with the players available".
