A top US general said on Thursday he had not received any new guidance about the war in Syria, four days after the conflict was discussed in a closed-door meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tweeted that Trump asked National Security Adviser John Bolton "to invite President Putin to Washington in the fall and those discussions are already underway". "There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems...but they can ALL be solved!" tweeted Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has asked two committees to hold hearings on Russian sanctions in the wake of President Donald Trump's questioning of the extent of Moscow's interference in USA elections.

During his summit with President Donald Trump on Monday, Putin proposed allowing the question the 12 Russian officials indicted in special counsel Robert Mueller's probe in exchange for letting Russia interview 11 Americans.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper confirmed Thursday that Donald Trump was briefed on USA intelligence findings that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally ordered cyberattacks to attempt to sway the 2016 presidential election.

But Trump called it an "incredible offer" on Monday in his press conference with Putin in Helsinki, and Sanders seemed to suggest Wednesday that the administration was evaluating it.

President Trump has someone new coming to his defense - Vladimir Putin.

"We see that there are forces in the USA that are easily ready to sacrifice Russian-American relations for their own ambitions", Putin said in a speech to Russian ambassadors gathered in Moscow.

"Well I would, because he's in charge of the country", he said. "The sentence should have been: 'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russian Federation'".

The senator's comments follow back-and-forth from the White House over where Mr. Trump stands on whether Russian Federation targeted the US election systems and continues to do so, after neglecting to fully hold Putin accountable for meddling during the leaders' summit on Monday.

"Trump derangement syndrome has officially come to the Senate", Paul declared.

He also lashed out at Europe and US -dominated North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, saying Russian Federation would hit back with an "equivalent response" to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bases near Russia's borders and other "aggressive steps".

Trump's "enemy of the people" attack on Thursday marked the second time Trump has emerged from a summit with a dictator who has restricted press freedoms and subsequently attacked the news media as an "enemy". The White House said earlier this week that it is considering the Kremlin's request, prompting a backlash from both Republicans and Democrats.

The intelligence briefing was held at Trump Tower.

"Symbolism is important, our agencies of government need to know that we stand behind them", Flake retorted on the floor, promising to raise the resolution again and predicting that "ultimately it will pass".
