"The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally", said Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Blasted for questioning the findings of US intelligence agencies that Russian operatives had meddled in the election - also a subject of more than two dozen indictments by the Department of Justice - Trump seemed more open to the intelligence findings, but continued to qualify his remarks.

On Tuesday he clarified, saying he meant to say that he saw no reason why it would not be Russian Federation that interfered in the elections, and that he had full faith in USA intelligence.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has the authority to order the FBI to examine a hacked Democratic National Committee Server at the center of Russian election meddling, and added the inspector general report on the bureau's Hillary Clinton probe had a "politically correct" conclusion.

It was also pointed out he made a handwritten note of his own during his "clarification" moment.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer was quick to pounce. As The Daily Beast reported, the comments left Trump's inner circle scrambling to convince the president to walk back the statements. "It's 24 hours too late, and in the wrong place", Schumer said. And Friday, special counsel Robert Mueller announced an indictment against 12 Russian intelligence agents for interfering in the election.

Speaking at the joint news conference, President Putin offered to allow United States investigators to visit Russian Federation to question the officers.

Comeback kings Croatia have unfinished business at the World Cup

European leaders are watching with great concerns the moves of Trump, who attended the two-day North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit in Brussels and then visited Britain last week, and during which Trump publicly battled his traditional allies. We're not at war with Russian Federation.

Trump praised Putin on hosting the soccer World Cup, which ended on Sunday, saying: "It was beautifully done, so congratulations".

"We are starting to achieve some understanding which gives us sufficient ground to say that some things - a lot of things changed to the better during today's meeting", he said. "Respected colleagues, when Mr. Trump came to Moscow, I didn't even know he was there", said Putin.

On Monday the USA and Russian presidents held almost two hours of one-on-one talks without their advisers in the Finnish capital Helsinki. "Vladimir Putin does not share our interests, Vladimir Putin does not share our values".

"The Democrats want open borders, which is basically saying we want open borders, we want crime", Trump said. They did interfere in our elections.

But it's not clear anyone is really looking to Comey for guidance on how to vote.
