Trump offered a light moment toward the beginning of the talks, joking that they should all get togethher for a photo to look "handsome" and "thin".

Trump has his critics around the world but the fact he has become the first US President to secure a meeting with a North Korean leader will go down in history.

The State Department is declining to release any additional information about the calls.

U.S. President Donald Trump has predicted that talks over ridding the Korean Peninsula of nuclear arms will be a "tremendous success" after a 45-minute meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un.

Even Trump admitted this during a visit to Seoul six months ago, when he referred to life in the North as "a hell that no person deserves". There was no proof, though, that this suspension were permanent rather than a simple freezing of activity while Kim negotiated with other countries like South Korea and the U.S.

U.S. and North Korea commit to recovering remains of prisoners of war, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified. The president's comments and face-to-face meeting with Kim have sparked criticism that he could legitimize or embolden North Korea's regime.

Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 summit over the weekend.

Kim was accompanied at the meeting by vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Kim Yong Chol, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the WPK Ri Su Yong, and Colonel General No Kwang Chol - one of the three promoted in a recent North Korean military shakeup.

Before getting on a plane headed back to the U.S., Trump held an hour-long press conference with the gathered worldwide media, describing his hopes for the impact of the summit.

The Republican leader said: "People are going to be very impressed and people are going to be very happy and we are going to take care of a very unsafe problem for the world". Try speaking out against the government, or holding a public protest, and it's a one-way ticket to the kwan-li-so, as North Korea's notorious political prisoner camps are known.

During the summit, Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim signed a joint statement in which the North Korean leader broadly "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

In advance of their private session, Trump predicted "tremendous success" while Kim said through an interpreter that "we have come here after overcoming" obstacles.
