CDC: US suicide rates have climbed dramatically

Suicide Rates Increase in Nearly All States

The findings were published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

A study released Thursday shows the suicide rate in IL rose by almost 23% between 1999 and 2016 and the suicide rate in IN rose nearly 32%.

Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health, Melissa Bailey, said one particular group - older white men - appears more at risk. Among the less-common factors presumed to have contributed to the suicides studied were physical health problems, legal difficulties, a family relationship issue or a job-related problem. DE saw the smallest increase at 5.9%, while North Dakota saw a 57.6% increase over the same period.

In all, 25 states saw increases in their suicide rates topping 30 percent.

On Thursday, public health officials urged people with suicidal thoughts to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255. It's up everywhere. And we know that the rates are actually higher than what's reported.

Among the agency's recommendations: Reduce a high-risk person's access to lethal items such as medications and firearms.

"Death by suicide is the ultimate Stage 4 event in the progression of many mental health conditions, whether or not they have ever been recognized and labeled".
