A Fairfield, California, couple was arrested for child neglect, torture, and child abuse by police who say they were forcing their 10 children to live in disgusting conditions.

KCRA reported that Fairfield police were originally responding to reports of a missing 12-year-old boy who they later located and returned to his home. According to a police statement, the boy was found sleeping under the bush of a nearby home.

But officers say the conditions between their first visit in March and their second on Friday had not improved, although they did conduct a search of the home.

Ina Rogers, the children's mother, was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of child neglect.

The police Family Violence Unit, Child Welfare Services and the District Attorney's Office then launched an investigation.

"Not only do I have 11 children - and I am 30 years old - but I also home school all of my children and people don't agree with that lifestyle", Rogers said.

The children's mother told news outlets on Monday that the situation exploded when she called police to report that her son was missing.

According to authorities, the children were not only made to live in unfit conditions, they were also abused and physical and emotionally traumatized.

Investigators believe nine of the 10 children were abused. His bail was set at $5.25 million, and he is due back in court May 24, according to court records.
