Americans freed from North Korea return to US

President Donald Trump will meet with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12, Trump announced Thursday, hours after suggesting that the release of three Americans held in the North heralded a potential breakthrough toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Until now, the only American released by North Korea during Trump's presidency was Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old university student who returned to the United States in a coma last summer after 17 months of captivity and died days later.

The first North Korea-U.S. summit is expected to be held in Singapore after U.S. President Donald Trump ruled out the other possible venue that had been named, Panmunjom, the truce village at the inter-Korean border.

Quoting a South Korean diplomat, the newspaper said North Korea's sincerity about dismantlement is being tested.

The remarks signaled how upbeat the Trump administration has become about the possibility that the Trump-Kim meeting will result in a secure commitment from the reclusive regime to give up its nuclear weapons program, even though Kim so far hasn't committed to anything that his father and predecessor didn't promise - and renege on - in the past.

It says family support is critically important for the returnees, and that allowing them to decompress away from their families is the standard, proven process for all who reintegrate into American society after a period of captivity.

Trump and First Lady Melania walked up the stairs to board the plane after it landed at Joint Base Andrews, a military base outside Washington DC, at around 2.40 am (0640 GMT).

Mike Pence said, "What Kim Jong Un has said publicly and in discussions is that he is prepared, he is prepared to negotiate to achieve complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

He said of the North Korean leader, "I really think he wants to do something", adding, "I really think a lot of progress has been made". One, people wonder if North Korea's definition of denuclearization is the same as the United States'.

Kim Jong Un is a lot like Trump because he's bold and engaging in personal diplomacy.

The talks, now scheduled for June 12, will mark the first time a sitting USA president has met with the leader of North Korea.

On April 30, Trump said that if things worked out as a summit in Panmunjom, "there is a great celebration to be had on the site, not in a third-party country".

Walking through the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C., Grace Jo remembers a pivotal point in her childhood in North Korea, what she calls 'the nearly dying moment'.

The three men had been jailed for anti-state activities and placed in labour camps.

Trump thanked the Korean leader for their release.

During their talks in Washington, the two discussed the upcoming North Korea-U.S. summit that's set for June 12th in Singapore.

United States officials had looked at several sites other than Singapore for the historic meeting but each was seen as problematic.

"You remember everybody in the fake news when they said 'he's going to get us into a nuclear war?'" he asked.
