George HW Bush hospitalized after wife's funeral

In a brief post on Twitter, family spokesman Jim McGrath said he could "happily" echo his report from Monday that the 93-year-old former president was "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering".

An update on former President George H.W. Bush. Doctors were treating him for an infection that spread to his blood.

Tuesday a family spokesperson says the President has since stabilized and is awake, alert and talking. Less than a week after First Lady Barbara Bush passed away the age of 92, America's 41st President is hospitalized with a blood infection.

McGrath wouldn't elaborate Tuesday on the specifics of Bush's condition, saying only that he would issue updates "when we have something to update".

Bush, the oldest-living former president - and longest-lived president in USA history - has vascular parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson's disease.

Both Bushes had been hospitalized off and on over the past couple years.

After retiring from public life, Bush joined Clinton to raise funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti quake.
