Kansas unemployment rate unchanged for March

Statewide, March's rate represents 81,229 unemployed persons, compared to 80,571 in February and 109,645 in March 2017. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.

Florida added 12,500 new public sector jobs in March pushing the jobs growth tally over 1.5 million during his tenure, Gov. Rick Scott announced Friday in Orlando.

Instead, Illinois lost 2,100 jobs over the month of March.

"In 2010, our unemployment rate peaked at 9.3 percent". There were 45,960 people employed, 743 more than February.

Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW): compiled on a quarterly basis from Unemployment Insurance records from some 96 percent of Wisconsin business establishments.

Jobs numbers come from a survey of employers and could miss new jobs at startup companies.

Glenn Mills, chief economist with the Maine Department of Labor, said the rate of 2.7 percent could be the lowest since 1957, when President Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday that Pennsylvania's unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in March for the 10th straight month. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 2,200 from the previous month.

The black unemployment rate in March was 7.0 percent, an increase from 6.9 percent in February. Madison County had Idaho's lowest unemployment rate at 1.8 percent.

Professional, Scientific and Business Services added 6,600 (+1.2%) jobs over the month. Among specific job categories, education, manufacturing, and construction added jobs.

Job gains in recent years, then, have been part of the recovery process, and there is still a ways to go.

Jobs were up in seven of the 11 industry supersectors.

Together, those three sectors accounted for almost 60 percent of the jobs created over the year. Over the year, Information jobs level remained unchanged (0.0%). Sectors with the biggest losses were manufacturing and financial activities.

South Carolina Electric and Gas and the state-owned utility Santee Cooper abandoned construction of two nuclear reactors in Fairfield County past year, causing the loss of hundreds of jobs. The sector, which includes other service jobs, was the other category losing jobs.

Leisure and hospitality cut 100 jobs. Several sectors, including construction; leisure and hospitality; natural resources; and transportation, all exceeded seasonal expectations, according to analysts. "But government doesn't create jobs - jobs are created when businesses put capital at risk".
