A Monday afternoon vehicle accident on Martinsburg Road that involved a Morgan County school bus with no students on board and a passenger vehicle closed the roadway for half an hour and resulted in minor injuries to a driver, said Sheriff K.C. Bohrer in a press release today.

"The private bus coming from neighboring state of Gujarat was parked on the roadside on the highway after it suffered a sudden tyre puncture".

According to police, all the deceased children were less than 11 years, writes Hindustan Times.

About 13 people were seriously injured.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office tweeted that Mr Modi was "anguished" over the news of the deaths.

"I'm deeply disturbed and saddened by the bus accident in Himachal, that has claimed many lives, including those of 26 children".

Jairam Thakur, chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, also expressed his condolences and assured families a thorough investigation will be carried out.

The state government has announced 500,000 rupees ($7,700) in compensation for each victim's family.
